Our Story, Our Journey

In 2013 The Transformed You set up as a not for profit organisation, to provide vital services for Children and Young People in Care and Care Leavers, that include a 1:1 mentoring programme, group/peer mentoring programme, advocacy, transition support, therapeutic care, a care leaver pantry, a drop in support service and more - all to give our mentees the much needed wrap around support as they journey in, through and out of the Care System.

Whilst our service is for all Children and Young People in Care and Care Leavers, in 2020 we became the home of The Black Care Experience, to shape a better Care Experience for Black Children and Young People in Care who have the poorest outcomes and life chances in comparison to any other ethnic group in the Care System.

As a care experienced founded and led organisation, we are all too familiar with the stigma attached to being in Care and the narrative surrounding the mental health and emotional wellbeing issues that impact on the outcomes and life chances of the children and young people in care; but through our targeted support we have seen that those with lived experience of the Care System can achieve and go on to live their version of a successful life at their own pace and on their own terms.

Through our targeted support we have also seen the need and reliance our Mentees have for our Service.

For example, when we first got the keys to our Hub, but before we had it decorated and furnished, we were notified that one of our mentees had been reported ‘Missing’. Able to get in contact with them, we let them know that we had the Hub and encouraged them to come along. To the surprise of the Local Authority, our Mentee turned up at the Hub and after sharing why they had gone missing, they agreed to return to the home of their Foster Carer.

It's moments like these and more that evidence that we are on track with our mission and it’s why we need your help to cover our ongoing and yearly core costs to continue to provide a service that truly makes a difference in the lives of our Children and Young People in Care and Care Leavers, because we believe our care experience is a chapter in our book and not the end of our story!
